What about DeSci?

Hi everyone! I’ve been here for a while—commenting here and there but mostly lurking.

Recently, I’ve noticed a trend that could be pretty relevant for Olas: the rise of the DeSci sector in blockchain. Big names like Vitalik and CZ have been seen talking about it, promoting, and teasing that they will have somehow a role in the popularization of this sector.

I think this is a commendable, and expected move. Crypto will never see mass adoption until it stops being just about pumping harry potter obama sonic coins and projects which are there just to surf on the hype and nothing else. People want real world usage. They want blockchain to aid them in everyday problems and solve infrastructure or trust problems in services we use every day.

DeSci has the potential to do just that. It could:

  1. Boost blockchain adoption by connecting it to science and research.
  2. Revolutionize funding for projects in fields like biotech and longevity (popular rn, but you name it).
  3. Rethink collaboration and peer review by making processes more open and fair.

CZ’s interest in DeSci is no small thing, last November, he shared that he’s been exploring how crypto can accelerate biotech research and funding. Just yesterday, he joined a gathering of DeSci entrepreneurs alongside Vitalik. With voices like these, DeSci could get serious traction.

Is DeSci real deal or a fad? How can Olas fit in here? Do you think there will be more platforms like Olas in the future or is it still too idealistic? Will we need a few more cycles to figure out what blockchain really needs to become a #1 system?

Hey! You brought up some great points—love seeing discussions like this.

I totally agree that DeSci feels like a breath of fresh air for the blockchain space. People are tired of meme coins and pump-and-dump projects. They want to see real utility—blockchain solving actual problems. And DeSci has huge potential to do just that.

Think about it: fairer funding for research, transparent collaboration, breaking down all that red tape in science… Blockchain is made for this kind of stuff. CZ diving into biotech funding and Vitalik constantly pushing for real-world use cases? That’s not random—it feels like they see something big coming here.

Where does Olas fit in? Well, platforms like Olas could:

  • Create decentralized funding models for scientific projects.
  • Make research processes more open and transparent.
  • Add incentive systems to improve peer reviews or collaborations.

Yeah, it might still feel a bit idealistic, but honestly, isn’t that what tech innovation is all about? We probably need another cycle or two to see how blockchain really integrates into daily life, but DeSci could be a key piece of the puzzle.

What do you think? Is DeSci here to stay, or just another hype wave? And can platforms like Olas lead the way, or do we need more time to figure it all out? Would love to hear your take!

DeSci is real. It’s a subset of DeKnow which Olas is pioneering. It looks like there are many people looking to disrupt science with decentralised protocols whereas thus far we’re the only ones taking aim at news media.

It will take time to get these systems right for sure. But they hold a huge amount of promise and the current academic publishing industry is completely ripe for disruption. It’s a poor quality product delivered at a ridiculously high cost with poor rewards for those that create the product.

DeSci seems like a big step forward for blockchain. Connecting it to real-world problems like funding and research could finally give the space more credibility. Platforms like Olas could play a role in making collaborations and funding more transparent, but I think adoption might take a while.

What do you think is the biggest barrier right now - lack of awareness or just the general public still not trusting crypto?

i’m trying to entice DeSci DAOs to recruit in Ireland, would love to see it take flight in the universities here – currently chasing AthenDAO, CerebrumDAO, and PsyDAO – any leads would help the cause

It is good seeing DeSci DAOs expanding into new regions-recruiting at universities is a solid move.

AthenDAO, CerebrumDAO, and PsyDAO are pushing forward decentralized research funding, while Olas is focused on making knowledge coordination censorship-resistant. Feels like there’s a big missing link between funding and ensuring research remains independent and accessible long-term. I want to know that are these DAOs also exploring decentralized publishing or research verification?

To my knowledge, the Research Hub Foundation (https://researchhub.foundation/) are the only crew working on what you’ve described. And also, they are partnered up and/or funding research at these DAOs. Could be cool to see if there are synergies for Olas there!
